Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team scored four goals in each of the first two periods en route to a 9-4 win over Concordia University Wisconsin Saturday night to complete the Harris Cup quarterfinal sweep of the Falcons.
The Saints did find themselves down very early in the game when CUW's Tanner Bull put the puck past CSS goalie
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) to make the score 1-0 just 3:43 into the game.
The Saints would not be held down for long, however, when just six minutes later
Bobby Lipsett (Salmon Arm, British Columbia/Salmon Arm Secondary (Salmon Arm-BCHL) ) took a
Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) pass and tied the game with just over 10 minutes left in the first period.
The Saints would go on to take the lead on the first of three goals for
Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)). Getting behind the Falcon defense on a shorthanded breakaway, Nowakowski slid the puck between the legs of CUW goalie Domingo Torrenueva to put the Saints up 2-1.
The Falcons would answer just 45 seconds later as Brandon Bayer beat Bruggeman to tie the game again at 2 goals apiece.
After a
Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) goal with less than 5 minutes to go in the first period, B. Nowakowski would net his second goal of the game and the fourth goal of the period for the Saints putting CSS up 4-2 going into the first intermission.
B. Nowakowski went on to score his third and final goal of the game and complete the hat trick just 40 seconds into the second period with
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) and
Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) accounting for the assists.
The Saints then scored two more goals in the next five minutes of game play by
Steven Phee (Balzac, Alberta/George McDougall HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) and
Joel Paiement (Okotoks, Alberta/Holy Trinity Academy (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ), respectively, putting the Saints up 7-2 just 5:14 into the second period.
The Saints and Falcons would trade goals later in the second period with
Alex Valenti (Blaine, Wash./Bellingham HS (Merritt-BCHL) ) scoring the CSS goal and James Poston scoring the goal for CUW making the score 8-3 after two periods.
A scary moment occurred for the Saints midway through the third period as Saints goalie Bruggeman went head over heels after a collision between two players at the net. Bruggeman would leave the game and not return, leaving
Connor Lucas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS ) to tend the net for the rest of the game.
Shortly after Lucas entered the game, CUW would net a power play goal on excellent puck movement making the score 8-4 in favor of the Saints.
That score would remain until Williams put home the ninth and final goal for the Saints with just 1:11 left in the game. Sutliffe and
Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) got credit for the assists on the play.
In total, the Saints had 15 players record at least one point in this victory with
Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) totaling four points on the night.
The Saints (15-8-4) will continue in the postseason next weekend as they travel to second-ranked Adrian College (Mich.) to take on the Bulldogs on Saturday in the Harris Cup semifinals. Catch all the exciting postseason action live at Saints Sports Net.
