Sutliffe Nets Game Winner for the Saints

| By:
Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – Freshman Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) broke a scoreless tie with 5:37 left in regulation to give the St. Scholastica men's hockey team a 1-0 victory over Concordia University (Wis.) Friday night in game one of a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Harris Cup quarterfinal.

The Saints controlled much of the first period, getting numerous quality scoring chances and out-shooting the Falcons 13-5. However, the contest remained scoreless after one.

The second period belonged to Concordia (Wis.), controlling the puck in the CSS zone for much of the period and out-shooting the Saints 12-9. Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) made a couple of nice saves to keep the game scoreless entering the third period.

The third period was much like the first as the Saints were in complete control, but could not beat CUW goaltender Domingo Torrenueva. Finally, after a Falcon giveaway in their own zone, Sutliffe skated in and went backhand to find the back of the net with over five minutes remaining.

The Falcons would only get one shot on net the rest of the way as the Saints took game one 1-0.

Bruggeman made 20 saves for his first collegiate shutout. Torrenueva had 39 saves in the loss for the Falcons. Both teams went a combined 0-for-3 on the power-play

Game two of the series will be played at 7 p.m. tomorrow night at Mars Lakeview Arena. The Saints need a win or tie to advance to the semifinals. If Concordia wins, then a 20-minute mini-game will be played immediately following game two. All of the action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
