Cougars Top Saints

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – In the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Game of the Week, the St. Scholastica women's basketball team suffered a 70-60 loss to conference leader University of Minnesota Morris Saturday at the Reif Gymnasium.

It was also Senior Day at the Reif as the Saints honored Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) and Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS).

After the Saints took an early four-point lead, the Cougars responded with a 7-0 run and did not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.  CSS kept it within single digits for most of the first half, but the Cougars got it to 10 on a couple of occasions. Morris led 33-25 at halftime.

The Saints shot 43 percent from the floor in the half and held Morris to 32 percent, but the Cougars had 11 offensive rebounds. The Saints also committed 11 turnovers, which led to eight Morris points. The Cougars had only three giveaways.

Morris remained in front in the second half, but the Saints kept it within striking distance. St. Scholastica cut the margin to three times, but two of those occasions Morris answered with a 3-pointer.

The third time, the Cougars responded with an 8-0 run to get the lead to 10 with 5:38 remaining. Morris hit its free throws late and wound up winning by that same margin 70-60.

The Cougars out-scored the Saints 16-9 in second-chance points. CSS was 3-of-10 from beyond the arc, while Morris was 6-of-18.

Leaders for the Saints include senior Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) with 22 points and seven rebounds. Elena Huber (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) added 15 points and Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) pitched in 11 points. Leading the Cougars was Kendra Wycoff with 17 points. Abby Fragodt recorded 18 rebounds for Morris (14-9, 11-1 UMAC).

The Saints (14-9, 9-3 UMAC) will head to the Twin Cities next weekend to close the regular season as they face both North Central University on Friday and the University of Northwestern on Saturday. Friday's North Central contest is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
