Second Half Dooms Saints for Second Straight Day

DE PERE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team led the University of Wisconsin-Stout 30-29 at halftime before falling behind by as much as 14 points in the second and coming up on the losing end of a 59-54 final score Tuesday evening.
 
The first half featured nine ties and nine lead changes. Neither team led by more than four points. In his first collegiate start, Zach Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) scored eight points in the first half, including draining a pair of free throws with under 10 seconds left in the half to give St. Scholastica a 30-29 halftime lead.
 
The Saints shot 42 percent in the half, while the Blue Devils were 41 percent. CSS was also 12-for-15 from the free throw line.
 
The Blue Devils (3-8) began the second half on a 13-4 run to take an eight point lead with 11 minutes to go. An Andrew Laughlin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) 3-pointer cut the margin to five, but Stout responded with an 11-2 run to take its biggest lead of the game of 53-39 with under six minutes to go.
 
The Saints would make a furious rally late going on an 11-0 run to make it a three-point game with 50 seconds remaining. However, the Blue Devils scored a layup on the ensuing possession and would hang on for a 59-54 victory.
 
Stout shot 48 percent from the floor in the second half to finish at 44 percent for the game. The Saints shot 42 percent for the game and attempted only two free throws in the second half. CSS committed 22 turnovers in the loss, while the Blue Devils only had 11.
 
Marc Peterson (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) led the Saints for the second straight game with 10 points. Joe Stark (Hayward, Wis./Hayward HS) added nine points and three other Saints finished with eight points. Julius Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) had eight points and a team-high seven rebounds. Three Blue Devils scored in double figures led by Brett Ahsenmacher with 13 points.
 
The Saints (3-7) will be back at home for the first time since November 16th when they host Finlandia University (Mich.) Monday at the Reif Gymnasium. Tip time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The game can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
