HANCOCK, Mich. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica Saints women's hockey team extended its undefeated record to 3-0 on the year after taking down conference rival Finlandia 8-0 on Friday night in Hancock, Michigan.
St. Scholastica came into weekend number two of the regular season with two wins under its belt and going up against a struggling Finlandia team. The Saints used the momentum from the first two games to fuel their fire power on offense, as they scored the first goal of the game nine minutes into the first period, coming off of the stick of Katie Josephson (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS). Abby Sawyer (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) would then connect with the back of the net with less than five minutes remaining in the first on a power play to give the Saints a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission.
CSS took advantage of another power play in the second period when Nina Waidacher (Arosa, Switzerland/Wirtschaftschule KV Chur (ZSC Lions/Swiss U18 National)) scored around the ten minute mark. Katie Josephson (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) then added her second goal of the game four minutes after Waidacher's goal, and after two periods of play the Lions found themselves down 4-0.
With just 15 seconds gone in the third period, Sierra Hanowski (Warroad, Minn./Warroad HS) beat Finlandia's keeper to make it 5-0. The Saints tacked on three more goals in the third period coming off the sticks of Taylor Guzzo (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelley HS (UW-River Falls)), Katie Josephson (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) (3rd goal of the game), and Sierra Hanowski (Warroad, Minn./Warroad HS) (2nd goal of the game).
Saints goalie Lindsey Hartfiel (Big Lake, Minn./Buffalo HS) earned her first shutout of the season after a solid performance between the pipes, recording 14 saves in the game.
Jenna Kosley led the Lions with four shots on goal, and goalie Taylor Gustafson, despite giving up eight goals, recorded 30 saves on the night.
These two squads will face off again Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Hancock, Michigan. The Saints will try to increase their dominant record to 4-0 on the season before they head back up to Duluth for two home games next weekend.
