Men's Hockey Suffers Setback at Finlandia

HANCOCK, Mich. (csssaints.com) – The eighth-ranked St. Scholastica men's hockey team was 2-for-9 on the power play and suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, falling 4-3 at Finlandia University (Mich.).
 
Finlandia wasted no time jumping on a lead on the Saints. Lucas Lahnala scored for the Lions almost seven minutes into the first period. With nine minutes to in the opening period, Tim Santopoalo scored another goal to put the Lions up 2-0. The Saints had outshot the Lions 15-8 in the first period.
 
Ryan Cooper (New Westminster, British Columbia/New Westminster Secondary (Dauphin-MJHL) ) got the first goal for the Saints midway through the second period. Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) and Derek Hills (Campbell River, British Columbia/Timberline Secondary (Bowling Green State) ) each recorded an assist on Cooper's goal. Chuck Marcoe scored a power play goal for the Lions with three minutes left in the second to put the Lions back up two goals. Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) answered with his own power play goal for the Saints with 23 seconds left in the period. He was assisted by Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) and Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ).
 
St. Scholastica opened the third period with a power play goal from Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) and was assisted by Nowakowski and Sutliffe to tie up the game. The Lions had a quick answer from Justin Scott to put Finlandia ahead 4-3 which would end up being the final score.

The Saints went 2-for-9 in the power play and had a man advantage for nearly 14 minutes. Scholastica's goalie Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) had 17 saves while allowing four goalsin the loss. Andrew Brownlee had 37 saves while allowing three goals for the Lions in their victory.
 
The Saints (4-1-0, 4-1-0 NCHA) and Lions (1-4-0, 1-2-0 NCHA) will face off again tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. (CST) at the Houghton County Arena.
