Sutliffe’s Hat Trick Leads Saints Past Raiders

Notables:
-The Saints sweep Marian University to start the year 2-0.
-Saints scored four goals in the second period.
-Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) scored three goals in the game for CSS. He now has five goals on the year.
-Luke Simpson (Canmore, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL) ) had a goal and two assists for St. Scholastica on the night.
-Joel Paiement (Okotoks, Alberta/Holy Trinity Academy (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) scored the game-winner for St. Scholastica at 12:12 of the second period.

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – St. Scholastica men's hockey completed a sweep of the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday with a 7-3 victory behind a Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) hat trick.
 
Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) got the scoring started for St. Scholastica for the second game in a row when he scored his third goal of the year at the 4:25 of the first period. Derek Hills (Campbell River, British Columbia/Timberline Secondary (Bowling Green State) ) got the assist on the play.
 
The Raiders would answer back with two goals to take a 2-1 lead heading into the second period. Eric Tien tied the game at 1-1 with his first goal of the season 5:04 from Logan Bauman and Omar Mullan. Then Jerad Tafoya gave MSOE the lead at 18:47 of the first period from Evan Wilson.
 
The second period opened with each team scoring a goal before St. Scholastica would explode for three unanswered goals. Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) scored at 3:06 from Ryan Cooper (New Westminster, British Columbia/New Westminster Secondary (Dauphin-MJHL) ) to tie the game at 2-2. Then at 8:10 Jerad Tafoya scored his second goal of the game from Evan Wilson to give the Raiders a brief 3-2 lead.
 
Luke Simpson (Canmore, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL) ) found the back of the net to once again even the score at the 10:11 mark from Sutliffe and Cooper. Two minutes late Joel Paiement (Okotoks, Alberta/Holy Trinity Academy (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) would give CSS the lead with an unassisted goal. A minute later the Saints would take a 5-3 lead on a Michael Spring (Kelowna, British Columbia/Okanagan Mission (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) goal, his first of the season, from Simpson and Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ).
 
Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) scored his fourth goal of the season at 1:25 of the third period from Michael Spring (Kelowna, British Columbia/Okanagan Mission (Chilliwack-BCHL) ). Sutliffe would go on to complete his hat trick at 17:01 of the third period from Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) and Luke Simpson (Canmore, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL) ). Neither team found the back of the net for the remainder of the third period making the final score 7-3.
 
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) made 26 saves for CSS while allowing three goals.
 
Zach Wooden played the first two periods in net for MSOE making 24 saves on five goals-allowed. Austin Campbell made seven saves and allowed two goals in his lone period in goal for the Raiders.
 
The Saints are back in action next weekend with a two-game series against Concordia University at Mars Lakeview Arena starting on Friday at 7 p.m.
