DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – St. Scholastica women's soccer defeated the University of Northwestern 4-1 Friday afternoon at Saints Field behind a
Kelsey Kehtel (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) natural hat trick.
After 33 minutes of scoreless soccer between CSS and Northwestern,
Kelsey Kehtel (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) broke the deadlock with her 13
th goal of the season on an assist from
Casey Mitchell (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech).
The Eagles were able to hold Kehtel off the score sheet for the remainder of the first half, but in the second half the Saints striker went on to complete a natural hat trick scoring her 14
th and 15
th goals of the season in the 63
rd and 76
th minutes.
Jalyn Britton (Eagan, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) added her team-leading 11
th assist of the season on Kehtel's third goal.
Northwestern would strike back in the 78
th to make it 3-1 with Katie Meinke scoring her first goal of the season with assist from Anna Hitterdal. The goal broke the shutout for CSS keeper
Kelsey Reeves (Eagle River, Alaska/Eagle River HS ) who finished the game with one save.
Leah Hamm (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) scored the final goal of the game for St. Scholastica in the 89
th minute bringing the final score to 4-1. The goal was Hamm's fifth of the season from
Kirsten Olsen (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS ).
Eagles goalkeeper Miranda Carda finished the game with nine saves on 13 shots on goal.
The Saints are 10-6-1 overall and 10-0-1 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. CSS is now tied with the University of Minnesota-Morris for first in the UMAC standings at 31 points apiece. St. Scholastica holds an 8-1-1 record over its last 10 games.
Northwestern has struggled this year with a 4-11 record overall and 4-7 in the UMAC. The Eagles are currently riding a four game losing streak.
St. Scholastica will host North Central University Saturday at Saints Field for senior day. Kickoff is at 2:15 p.m.
