DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team took down Martin Luther College Friday night in three sets at the Reif Gymnasium.
The Saints had two players with kills in the double digits.
Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) led the team with 12 kills. Following her lead was
Amanda Belden (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) with 10 kills to add to the Scholastica victory.
Noelle Elvehjem (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) followed suit with nine kills.
Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) and
Danielle Benusa (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) each tallied 13 digs for the Saints. Birkeland also fueled the offense with 21 set assists.
Emily Jansen (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle HS) chipped in also with 15 assists to Saints hitters.
The first set contained three lead changes and 5 tied scores. The Saints ended up chalking up a win in that set by a 25-23 score. The next set was controlled by the Saints with only one lead change and three tied scores and was determined a Saints win with a score of 25-19. Finally, the Saints took the third set 25-21 with five tied scores and one lead change. St. Scholastica's record improves to 13-12 overall and have a 7-3 UMAC record.
The Knights didn't go down without a battle. Kayla Schoeneck led the offense with nine kills on the Saints while Kira Grev dug 14 times defensively. Martin Luther had 36 kills as a team with no players earning more than 10 kills in the match. The Knights' record falls to 10-15 overall and an even 5-5 in UMAC play.
The Saints' next match will be Saturday against Bethany Luthern College to continue UMAC play. The match will be held at home in the Rief Gymnasium with a start time at 1 p.m.
