COLERAINE, Minn. (csssaints.com) – Coming off of her first Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) win, St. Scholastica senior
Sarah Allen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Northern Michigan)) once again proved it was no fluke as she posted her second best CCSA finish ever in seventh place in the women's 5km freestyle Saturday at Mt. Itasca. Allen posted a time of 15:31.3, in frigid conditions.
Michigan Tech's Alice Flanders trounced the field by 42 seconds to win in a time of 14:36.8, to post her second win of the season. The race after Flanders, however, was very tight as Felicia Gesior and Mary Kate Cirelli of Northern Michigan finished second and third, just three seconds apart in 15:19.6 and 15:22.6, respectively. Third through sixth were separated by 4.7 seconds, with Allen a mere 9.7 seconds off the podium.
Sophomore
Chelsey Youngberg (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) finished in 17th with a time of 16:18.8, while teammate, senior
Brooke Adams (Spooner, Wis./Spooner HS ), finished 1.2 seconds later in 16:20.0 to take 18th and round out the Saints scoring.
The Saints finished fourth on the day with 50 points, behind Northern Michigan with 70 points, Michigan Tech with 68, and a strong showing Gustavus Adolphus with 54.
"It was another good showing by the women, with Sarah proving that she is a true contender again today," said Saints head coach
Chad Salmela. "Sure, we didn't reproduce the magic of yesterday, but overall, the trend is that the women are skiing at or near their ability as we head into the two upcoming championship weekends. I couldn't be happier with where we are as a team."
The Saints have a week off of CCSA action before heading to Ishpeming, Mich., for the CCSA Championships, February 8 and 9.
