Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. (csssaints.com) – In a game that was just as even as Friday night's contest, the 15th-ranked St. Scholastica men's hockey team was on the wrong end of a 4-3 overtime decision at No. 1-ranked Adrian College (Mich.) Saturday afternoon.
Each team scored one goal in each period of regulation. The Bulldogs scored the first goal of the contest with less than nine minutes remaining in the opening period.
Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) tied the game at 1-1 with two seconds left in the first period.
Joel Paiement (Okotoks, Alberta/Holy Trinity Academy (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) and
Bobby Lipsett (Salmon Arm, British Columbia/Salmon Arm Secondary (Salmon Arm-BCHL) ) had the assists. Adrian out-shot the Saints 9-8 in the opening period.
The Bulldogs scored the only power-play goal of the weekend and their only power-play of the game four minutes and 25 seconds into the second period as Jeremy Olinyk found the back of the net. Then with a minute left in the period,
Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) tied it for the Saints at 2-2.
Michael Spring (Kelowna, British Columbia/Okanagan Mission (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) was credited with the assist. The Saints had a 13-12 shots advantage on the Bulldogs in the second.
CSS then took its first lead of the game two minutes and 46 seconds in the third period as Paiement scored his first of the season to make it 3-2.
Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) had the assist. It stayed 3-2 until Adrian's Duston Hebebrand scored his second of the game with 5:27 remaining in regulation. It stayed 3-3 at the end of the third period as the Saints were headed to their fourth straight overtime game.
Two minutes into overtime, Justin Basso netted the game winner for Adrian to make the final score 4-3 and keep the Bulldogs unbeaten for the season. This marks the first Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) loss for the Saints and their first overtime loss of the season.
The Saints out-shot Adrian 34-30 for the game.
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) had 26 saves in the loss for the Saints. Scott Shackell had 31 saves in the win for Adrian (14-0-3, 8-0-2 NCHA).
The Saints (9-4-4, 6-1-3 NCHA) will be on the road again next weekend when they face Lawrence University (Wis.) for a two game NCHA series. Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Listen to the action live on Saints Sports Net.
