Saints Come Up Short at Crown

Box Score ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St Scholastica men's basketball team walked away with its second consecutive loss on Saturday falling to Crown College 84-68.

The first half was an even battle between the two teams as the Saints fought to stay with the Storm. The Saints struggled to sink the 3-point shot and Crown made six more free throws to be ahead 35-29 at halftime.

Scottie Rucks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS) led the Saints with six points followed by Steve Golobich (Mountain Iron, Minn./Mountain Iron-Buhl HS (Mesabi Range CC)) with five points. The Storm's leading scorers for the first half were Truman Shetler, Bryce Williams, and Truman Messner all chipping in nine points. Crown shot only 31 percent from the floor, but grabbed 10 offensive rebounds.

Both teams would shoot over 50 percent from the floor in the second half; however, the Saints struggled to begin the half. Back-to-back 3-pointers capped off an 8-0 run to begin the half for the Storm.

Crown's lead climbed to as high as 28 as they cruised to an 84-68 victory.

The Saints shot 44 percent for the game, which was better than Crown's 43 percent, but CSS was 2-of-8 on 3-point attempts and just 12-for-22 from the free throw line. The Storm made 12, 3-pointers and was 12-for-16 from the charity stripe. Crown out-rebounded the Saints 47-33 and had a 16-6 advantage in second chance points.

Rucks led the Saints with 14 points. Right behind him was Golobich with 10 points. Conference leading scorer Bryce Williams, along with Truman Messner, had 18-point nights to lead Crown (6-8, 3-0 UMAC). Billy Berglund chipped in a double-double for the night with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Saints (4-10, 1-2 UMAC) will be back at home next weekend for a pair of games. They will begin with Martin Luther College at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Reif Gymnasium. The action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
