Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team held Northland College to just nine made field goals in a 71-27 victory in the conference opener Tuesday night at the Reif Gymnasium.
For the first six minutes of the game, the Saints struggled to break away from Northland with neither team straying away from two points of the other until the 13:42 mark. From there, the Saints took the lead and went on a 16-0 run over the Jills.
Northland shot 13 percent for the half and their leading scorer, Erin Gilligan, was held to only five points. Whereas the LumberJills struggled to make shots against the Saints, they did make 83 percent from the free throw line compared to the Saints' 63 percent.
The Saints ended the half up 38-11 with
Sammy Doucette (Colfax, Wis./Colfax HS (UW-River Falls)) being the top scorer with nine points. Following her was
Elena Huber (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) with seven points. The Saints shot 50 percent from the floor in the half.
The Saints spent the rest of the second half slowly raising the margin to secure the win.
CSS kept up the good shooting percentages for the second half as it finished at 49 percent.
Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) dominated the second half for the Saints and led the team with 13 points. Doucette took home 11 points for the night.
Emily Glomski (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia/Dhahran HS) added 10 points off the bench.
Northland (2-8, 0-1 UMAC) slightly raised their shooting percentage up to 20 percent for second half, but they ended at only 17 percent. The Saints tied a program record by holding the Jills to only nine made field goals. Erin Gilligan led the Jills with seven points.
The Saints (6-6, 1-0 UMAC) next take on the University of Minnesota Morris on Friday in Morris. The tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
