Saints Calm the Storm; Shutout Simpson 2-0

Box Score MOORHEAD, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team outshot Simpson College (Iowa)17-6 on its way to a 2-0 shutout victory in the non-conference season finale Sunday afternoon.

The Saints came out firing in the first half as Kelsey Kehtel (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) found the back of the net just 18 seconds into the contest off of an assist from Casey Mitchell (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech). CSS dominated the ball in the first half, but despite nine first half shots, the game remained 1-0 headed into half, as Storm keeper Stephanie Cox made seven first half saves.

CSS continued to pepper Cox in the second half with another nine shots, eventually extending the lead as Mitchell scored a goal in the 55th minute off the Claire Lubansky (Chaska, Minn./Chaska HS) feed. The two goal advantage would prove to be more than enough for CSS, as the Saints defense held strong for the remainder of the game, as the contest ended score of 2-0.

Kelsey Reeves (Eagle River, Alaska/Eagle River HS ) saved five shots in the win for the Saints, as she picked up her first shutout of the season. Storm keeper Stephanie Cox had nine saves in the losing effort for Simpson.

The Saints now have a week-long break until they begin conference play on the 17th. CSS will head to Ashland to face Northland at 4:45 p.m. for the UMAC (Upper Midwest Athletic Conference) Opener.
