Box Score 2 SPOKANE, Wash. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team fell to Whitworth University, but defeated Whitman College in the third place game to finish 1-3 in the Whit Classic.
Saints vs. Whitworth
The Saints began the second day against the host, Whitworth University. It was another slow start for CSS, dropping the first set 25-13. The second set saw the Pirates (3-4) pull away late in the set to win it 25-21.
The Saints stayed alive to take the third set 25-22. In the fourth set, the Saints held a 21-19 lead before the Pirates scored five straight points and ultimately won the set and match 25-22.
Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) led CSS with 14 kills, while
Kayla Horbacz (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) added 10 kills.
Emily Jansen (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle HS) had 24 assists and
Kirsten Eaton (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) added 18 assists.
Alex Barsody (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) led the team with 18 digs.
Saints vs. Whitman
The Saints played Whitman in the third-place match of the tournament. Whitman fell to the College of Saint Benedict earlier in the day and defeated the Saints in five sets on Friday.
The Missionaries (2-6) took the first set 25-21. CSS led for most of the second set, but Whitman took a 21-20 lead. CSS bounced back to record the next four points, but the Missionaries fought off three set points to tie it at 24-24. However, Whitman committed back-to-back errors to give the Saints the set 26-24.
The third set was all CSS and probably the best set played by the Saints in Washington. The Saints jumped out to a 12-3 lead and went on to win the set 25-14.
The fourth set went back-and-forth with the Saints holding a 19-15 lead at one point. However, the Missionaries battled back and had a set point at 24-23. A service error tied it at 24-24.
Kayla Horbacz (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) then picked up the solo block to put the Saints up 25-24.
Gloria Ohaju (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) followed that with a block solo of her own to give the Saints the 26-24 match win.
Horbacz led the team with 12 kills and Morrin added 11 kills. Eaton and Jansen each recorded 20 set assists. Barsody led the team with 20 digs.
The Saints (3-5) will be back in Minnesota next Saturday when they travel to face the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph. The action is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
