DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team will have its home opener this weekend when it faces Crown College on Saturday for Homecoming and the University of Minnesota Morris on Sunday at Reif Gymnasium.
*Note: The Saints will also have a JV match vs. Lakehead University at 2 p.m. on Saturday

St. Scholastica Saints
Record: 4-7 (1-1 UMAC)

- The Saints finished their first weekend of UMAC competition by going 1-1 on the road. Last Friday's game was against Northwestern which resulted in a loss in straight sets. The Saints came back on Saturday to defeat North Central in straight sets.
- In last Friday's game against Northwestern, the Saints had three players record double-digit digs. Freshman
Rachel Harmston (Cook, Minn./North Woods HS) had 11, followed by Sophomore
Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) and
Emily Cole (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (UW-Superior)) with 10 apiece.
- In Saturday's game against North Central, the Saints were led by Morrin and Senior
Kayla Horbacz (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) as they both had 10 kills in the match. Junior
Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) also had a strong match as she recorded a season-high 41 assists as well as four service aces.
- Sophomore
Gloria Ohaju (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) has been playing well on the defensive side as she has led the team in blocks in five of the team's 11 matches and she is also ranked second in the UMAC in blocks per set with 1.03.
- The Saints had a season-high in attack percentage against North Central at .352 as well as tying their season-high in kills with 48.

Crown College Storm
Record: 0-15 (0-2 UMAC)

- The Storm are still searching for their first win of the season as well as their first won set of the season as they have been swept in all of their matches this season.
- Offensively Crown has been led by Senior Shelby Vischer, who has 90 kills thus far on the season.
- Crown has two different setters with over a hundred assists. Sophomore Brittany Gamer has 123 so far while Freshman Erica Kirkwold has a total of 118.

University of Minnesota Morris
Record: 8-6 (2-0 UMAC)

- The Cougars are coming off a pair of wins last weekend against Bethany Lutheran and Martin Luther. For the first time in program history, the Cougars have started UMAC play with a 2-0 record.
- Senior Mandy Allman was recently honored for recording her 1,000th career assist earlier this season. So far this season she has 296 assists.
- Junior Emily Auch has been playing very well lately as she recorded double digit kills in both of the Cougars matches last weekend. She leads the team in kills with 154 and is also second on the team in digs. She was recently named the UMAC Offensive Player of the Week for her play last weekend.
- Sophomore Abby Tietz is not far behind Auch in kills as she comes in second on the team with 152 as well as leading the team in blocks. Tietz also has recorded a 3.04 kills per set average, which is second in the UMAC.
- Senior Kaylie Clark leads the Cougars on the defensive side as she leads the team in digs with 270, which is also tops in the UMAC. She has the best digs per set average in the UMAC as well, with an average of 5.40.
Series History: (CSS is 23-9 vs. Minnesota Morris)
- The Saints won both matches against the Cougars last year. The first being a 3-2 win in Morris and sweeping the second match at home.
- CSS has rallied from two sets down to defeat the Cougars in three of the last four meetings. |
