Box Score MORRIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team only found the basket nine times from the field in the first half in Saturday afternoon's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) showdown with conference leader Minnesota Morris. The Saints were unable to overcome the 13 point halftime deficit and fell to the Cougars by a score of 73-58.
The first half was close throughout as the Cougars never were able to get the lead above four points. However at the 4:43 mark the Cougars would take advantage of the poor shooting by the Saints and go on an 8-0 run to end the half leading the Saints 32-19 heading into the break.
CSS finished the first half going 26-percent (9-35) from the field, 0-percent (0-6) from beyond the arc, and 17-percent (1-6) from the free throw line. Morris would have a tough shooting half as well, going 29-percent (10-34) from the field, 27-percent (4-15) from beyond the arc, and 61-percent (8-13) from the free-throw line.
The second half saw Morris extend its lead to as much as 21 points, but the Saints chipped away in the latter stages of the half only to be outscored by two points, 41-39, in the second half. CSS would fall by a final score of 73-58.
Morris (16-7, 12-0 UMAC) was led by UMAC Player of the Year candidate Emily Mehr with 23 points and eight rebounds. Kendra Wycoff chipped in 20 points for the Cougars as well.
Morris would finish the game shooting 40-percent from the field, 30-percent from beyond the arc, and 60-percent from the free-throw line. The Cougars would commit only five turnovers on the day. With the victory, Morris claimed at least a share of the regular season conference title.
CSS was led by
Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) with 20 points and five rebounds.
Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) added 15 points while
Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) chipped in eight points and grabbed a team high 11 rebounds. No other Saints player scored above five points.
The Saints finished the game shooting 35-percent from the field, 25-percent from beyond the arc, and 46-percent from the free-throw line. The Saints held a 51-41 rebounding advantage, a 20-9 second chance point's advantage, but did commit 11 turnovers on the day.
St. Scholastica (10-13, 8-4 UMAC) will host North Central University next Friday and Northwestern College on Saturday in the team's final home games of the regular season. Friday's contest is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. local time. Tune into csssaints.com for a live broadcast of the game.
