Box Score EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team kept its streak of defeating ranked opponents intact, this time defeating No. 4 ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 3-0 Friday night in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) match-up.
The opening period was all CSS as
Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) would tally the game's first goal just 4:23 into the game.
Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) and
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) would assist on the even strength goal. Nowakowski would score his second goal of the game and 14th of the year with less than two minutes left in the period to put CSS up 2-0. D. Nowakowski and
Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) would assist on the goal.
Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) would get in on the scoring action just 90 seconds later to put the Saints up 3-0. Last week's NCHA Player of the Week,
Tyler Miller (Fort Frances, Ontario/Rainy River HS (Thunder Bay-SIJHL) ), would assist on Corcoran's even strength goal.
The Saints would hold off the Blugold attack for the remaining two periods and recorded their first shutout of the season with a 3-0 victory.
UW-Eau Claire (18-4-2, 13-3-1 NCHA) was held scoreless for the first time this season despite outshooting the Saints 50-37. CSS goaltender
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) was up to the challenge stopping a career-best 50. It is his second shutout as a Saint. Brandon Stephenson had 34 saves in the loss for the Blugolds.
CSS now holds a three-game win streak against ranked opponents and has won their last four games overall. With UW-Superior and UW-River Falls playing to a tie tonight, the Saints moved up to fourth all alone in the NCHA standings and can finish no worse than fifth. CSS can clinch as high as a third seed with a win tomorrow night paired with a UW-Stevens Point loss.
