Men’s Hockey Takes Down Fourth-Ranked Green Knights

| By:
Box Score DE PERE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – For the fifth straight year and the fourth time in the last five years at the Cornerstone Community Center, the St. Scholastica men's hockey team defeated a top five St. Norbert College squad, winning 5-2 Friday night over the fourth-ranked Green Knights.

The conference's leading scorer got it started for St. Norbert early as Kyle Stroh scored one minute and 16 seconds into the game to put the Green Knights up 1-0.

The Saints answered just nine seconds later when Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) scored his second of the season. Tyler Miller (Fort Frances, Ontario/Rainy River HS (Thunder Bay-SIJHL) ) and Alex Valenti (Blaine, Wash./Bellingham HS (Merritt-BCHL) ) had the assists.

Later in the period, Valenti put CSS ahead with Miller getting the assist with 9:28 on the clock. Then with four seconds left in the opening period, Miller scored to put the Saints up 3-1 at the first intermission. Valenti and Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) were credited with the assists.

If you recall in the two previous meetings at Mars Lakeview Arena earlier this season, the Saints allowed six unanswered goals by the Green Knights in back-to-back games after the first period. That would not be the case tonight.

Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) extended the St. Scholastica lead to 4-1 with eight minutes left in the second period. Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) and Chris Sinclair (Fort Frances, Ontario/Beaver Brae Secondary (Fort Frances-SIJHL) ) had the assists. Less than two minutes later, Miller netted his second of the contest and it was Corcoran and Valenti again with the assists as the Saints led 5-1 at the second intermission.

St. Norbert (16-5-1, 10-4-1 NCHA) would get a power-play goal in the third period, but that was it as the Saints prevailed 5-2.

Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) made 22 saves to earn the win for CSS, while David Jacobson had 11 saves in the loss for the Green Knights. St. Norbert was held to 1-for-7 on the power-play.

The Saints (9-12-1, 5-9-1 NCHA) will head to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point next for a game against the 14-ranked Pointers tomorrow night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. Listen to all of the action live on Saints Sports Net.
