Hot Shooting Helps Saints Tame Lions

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team started the game out on a 19-4 run and shot a 64-percent from beyond the arc in the first half en route to a 89-59 blowout of the Finlandia University Lions Saturday afternoon at the Reif Gymnasium.

Finlandia took their only lead of the game after scoring the game's first basket on a jumper from Keith Arnold.  CSS then went on a 19-2 run to lead 19-4 with 9:27 left in the half.  A pair of three pointers from Steve Golobich (Mountain Iron, Minn./Mountain Iron-Buhl HS (Mesabi Range CC)) helped ignite the scoring onslaught for the Saints.

CSS finished the first half shooting 44-percent from the field and 64-percent from beyond the arc en route to a 45-17 halftime score.  Andrew Laughlin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) of the Saints capped off the impressive half for the Saints hitting a three-pointer as time expired.

The second half was much of the same as CSS was able to utilize every player on the bench.  Finlandia did score 42 second half points, but the Saints would prevail by a score of 89-59.

Finlandia (2-10) was led by Brandon Robinson with 19 points and four assists.  Jonah Benoit was the only other Lion player to reach double figures with 10 points.

The Lions shot a dismal 19-percent in the first half from the field and finished the contest shooting 21-for-75.  Finlandia had just five steals while turning the ball over 14 times.

CSS was led by Jake Naslund (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) with 19 points while collecting nine rebounds.  Golobich added 11 points while going 3-for-4 beyond the arc.  Trevor Morlock (Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS (Minn., Crookston)) chipped in a double-double effort scoring 10 points and grabbing a team high 13 rebounds.  Laughlin was the final Saint to reach double figures, adding 10 points off of the bench.  Every player scored for the Saints in the contest.

The Saints finished the game shooting 43-percent from the field, 44-percent from beyond the arc, and 68-percent from the charity stripe.  CSS did only shoot 1-for-7 from beyond the arc in the second half.

CSS finished the game holding a 64-39 rebounding advantage, a 38-24 points in the paint advantage, and held their largest lead of the game at the 3:23 mark leading by 44 points.  The Saints committed 15 turnovers in the contest.

St. Scholastica (2-6) will play in the Wisconsin Dells Tournament over the Holiday break as they face UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, December 28th and UW-LaCrosse on the following day.  Tip for the first game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on the 28th.  Tune into csssaints.com for updates from these games.
