Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The 10th-ranked St. Scholastica men's hockey team beat Lake Forest College (Ill.) Friday night 4-1 behind a goal and an assist apiece by both
Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) and
Alex Valenti (Blaine, Wash./Bellingham HS (Merritt-BCHL) ).
Lake Forest got the scoring started early when, in the fourth minute of the game, Jack Lewis put the puck past Saints goalie
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) on a shorthanded breakaway to make the game 1-0 in favor of the Foresters.
That lead would be erased six minutes later when Williams found the net on a pass from
Brandon Parrone (Peoria, Ariz./Brophy College Prep (Melfort-SJHL) ) to tie the game at 1-1.
That score would remain tied the rest of the way through the first period and through the first six minutes of the second period when, at the 6:05 mark in the second,
Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) scored past goalie Billy Cooper to make the score 2-1 Saints with Williams and
Michael Spring (Kelowna, British Columbia/Okanagan Mission (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) notching the assist on the play.
Perhaps the play of the game came when the third goal was scored by
Derek Hills (Campbell River, British Columbia/Timberline Secondary (Bowling Green State) ). Hills hit a one-timer slap-shot from the blue line and sniped it past Cooper for a power-play goal at the 9:25 minute mark in the second. Valenti and
Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) set up the one-timer and took the assists on the goal.
Valenti would later add an empty net goal with just 17 seconds remaining in the game to make the score 4-1, as the Saints (7-1-2, 5-0-2 NCHA) knocked off Lake Forest (5-5-0, 4-3-0 NCHA).
The Saints killed off seven penalties in this contest holding Lake Forest to only six shots throughout, adding to Bruggeman's total of 27 saved shots in which 25 came in the second and third periods.
These two teams will play again tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. at Mars Lakeview Arena. Catch the action live on Saints Sports Net.
