Box Score RIVER FALLS, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team held the University of Wisconsin-River Falls to 22 percent field goal shooting as it defeated the Falcons 70-57 Sunday afternoon.
Entering today, the Saints had lost six straight to the Falcons with their last win coming at River Falls in 2007.
CSS would never trail in the contest, scoring the first five points of the game. The Saints lead remained in the single digits for the first 16 minutes of the first half before St. Scholastica used a 10-2 run to extend its lead to 13 with over two minutes left. The Saints went into halftime with a 41-27 advantage.
Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) scored 16 of her game-high 20 points in the first half.
Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (Braham, Minn./Braham HS (Minn. Duluth)) added 12 points in the first 20 minutes. CSS shot 56 percent from the floor, while the Falcons shot only 20 percent, making just six field goals.
The St. Scholastica margin was cut to eight with 6:33 left in the second half, but the Saints shot well from the free throw line as they were 10-for-12 from the charity stripe in the final six minutes to go on to win 70-57.
CSS was 17-for-20 from the free throw line in the second half and 26-for-32 for the game. The Saints shot 46 percent from the field for the game and held the Falcons to only 13 made field goals. The Saints recorded seven blocks, four of which by
Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS). The Saints out-scored the Falcons 32-12 in the paint.
Frase, who transferred from UW-River Falls after her freshman season, recorded her first double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Sorenson finished with 18 points and
Kayla Swanson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) had 10 points. Hailey Siegle led the Falcons (3-7) with 15 points.
The Saints (4-5) will be back in action in the Twin Ports on New Year's Eve when they take on Bridge rival UW-Superior at the Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium. The action is set to begin at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
