Saints Fall to Titans after Poor Shooting Second Half

Box Score WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. (csssaints.com) – In its first action in 21 days, the St. Scholastica men's basketball team fell to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh 78-58 Saturday night in the Holiday Classic at the JustAGame Fieldhouse.

The Saints got off to a great start as LaMonte Hall (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS (Saint Mary’s)) drained a 3-pointer and Mike Spoden (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) followed with a bucket as CSS scored the first five points of the contest. However, the Titans scored the next nine points to take the lead.

Oshkosh led by seven midway through the half, but the Saints went on an 8-0 run, thanks to four points each from Spoden and Trevor Morlock (Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS (Minn., Crookston)), as St. Scholastica re-gained the lead at 24-23. The lead then traded hands seven times in the final seven minutes with the Titans making three free throws in the final minute of the half to take a 36-34 lead into the locker room.

The Saints shot 52 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, while Oshkosh shot 46 percent. CSS did not shoot a single free throw in the half, while the Titans were 7-for-15 from the charity stripe.

The Titans opened things up early in the second half with a 10-0 run. The Saints responded with a 7-0 run with five points coming from Andrew Laughlin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS). Oshkosh quickly got the margin back up to 10 and the Saints would only get as close as eight the rest of the way as the Titans prevailed 78-58.

Oshkosh outscored the Saints 18-8 in the paint and had 12 points off of turnovers in the half. CSS shot only 32 percent in the second half to finish at 44 percent for the game. The Titans shot 45 percent for the game. The Saints committed 19 turnovers, while Oshkosh had only eight turnovers.

Laughlin led the Saints with a career-high 17 points, 15 of which came in the second half. Morlock added 13 points and Spoden had nine points. Steve Golobich (Mountain Iron, Minn./Mountain Iron-Buhl HS (Mesabi Range CC)) grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. Alex Olson had 18 points to pace the Titans (4-6).

The Saints (2-8) will be at the JustAGame Fieldhouse again tomorrow when they take on the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
