Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The ninth-ranked St. Scholastica men's hockey team lost to sixth-ranked University of St. Thomas Saturday night 3-0 at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The Tommies took the momentum early in the game as Connor McBride shot the puck off of the hip of Saints goalie
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) and into the net to make it 1-0 St. Thomas with 7:34 left in the opening period.
A scary moment happened for the Saints when Bruggeman fell to the ice injured midway through the second period. The training staff was able to tend to Bruggeman on the ice and he was able to complete the game with 29 total saves on 31 shots.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Tommies until, with 4:40 left in the third period Steve Sorensen of St. Thomas netted the Tommies second goal of the game to put them up by two goals late in the game.
St. Thomas would add an empty net goal with just three seconds left to make the final score 3-0. That marked the first time the Saints have been shut out since a 3-0 loss to UW-Eau Claire on February 11, 2011.
St. Thomas held the Saints to just two shots on three power plays while they themselves only managed four shots on their four power plays in the game.
Winning goalie Drew Fielding stopped all 23 of the Saints' shots in the contest to improve the Tommies to an 8-1-2 record.
The Saints (8-3-2) will take their holiday break and will next be in action January 10, 2014 when they travel to Hamline University with the puck set to drop at 7 p.m.
