Box Score SUPERIOR, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team got the first win of the season under its belt, downing Finlandia University (Mich.) 74-55 Sunday afternoon at the Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic, hosted by UW-Superior.
The win came behind an extremely balanced attack that saw
LaMonte Hall (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS (Saint Mary’s)),
Steve Golobich (Mountain Iron, Minn./Mountain Iron-Buhl HS (Mesabi Range CC)), and
Trevor Morlock (Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS (Minn., Crookston)) each record 10 points.
The first half of this contest saw seven lead changes and four ties in a back-and-forth effort by both teams. No team had long scoring runs until the three minute mark in the half. The Saints would begin a 9-0 run started by a
Julius Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) 2-point jumper to tie the game at 29-29.
That would be followed by a Morlock layup, a Hall 3-pointer, and capped by a Johnson layup with 14 seconds left in the half to put the Saints up 36-29 heading into halftime. Johnson would finish the game with eight points.
St. Scholastica would extend the lead to double digits just seconds into the second half with Golobich nailing a 3-pointer to make the score 39-29 Saints.
The Saints would retain that lead all throughout the half building it as high as 22 points behind eight second half points from
Mike Spoden (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS).
The Saints had 11 players record points in this game with 27 bench points to 20 from Finlandia.
The Saints (1-6) are next in action this Saturday when they face Finlandia (1-9) once again at 5 p.m. at the Reif Gymnasium. The action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
