Shooting Struggles Haunt Saints in Loss

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's basketball team fell to University of Wisconsin-Superior 86 -72 in a Border Battle Monday night at the Reif Gymnasium. 

In the first minutes of the game, Mike Spoden (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) was fouled and made one free throw for the game's first points. The Saints proceeded to miss their next eight shots letting the Jackets get ahead 7-1 at the 16:30 mark.

LaMonte Hall (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS (Saint Mary’s)) drained a three to get the Saints going, but it was followed by three turnovers leading to a Saints timeout at the 13:14 mark with a score of 15-4 UWS.

Throughout the next three minutes, the Saints went on an 8-0 run.  However, the Saints struggled to score and continued to send Superior to the foul line.  Superior ended the half leading with a score of 37-27.

The Saints shot 32 percent from the field and only 2-for-7 from the free throw line.  The Yellowjackets shot 53 percent and 82 percent from the free throw line.

The second half was full of back and forth action with the Saints struggling to catch up to the Jackets.  The Saints did force 16 UWS turnovers, which led 25 points. 

However, the Saints' shooting struggles continued and they ended up falling 86-72. 

The Saints shot 35 percent for the game and were 7-for-29 on 3-point attempts.  CSS was also only 7-for-14 from the free throw line.  Superior on the other hand shot 51 percent from the floor and was astounding with 35-for-39 from the charity strip.

Jake Naslund (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) led four Saints in double figures with 17 points.  Steve Golobich (Mountain Iron, Minn./Mountain Iron-Buhl HS (Mesabi Range CC)) added 11 points and Nathan Carlson (Alvarado, Minn./East Grand Forks HS) and Trevor Morlock (Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS (Minn., Crookston)) each added 10.  Jarrod Peterson had a game high of 32 points including 17-for17 from the free throw line, to pace Superior.  Morlock and Carlson both lead the team in rebounds with seven and Bronson Byrne had a double-double with 14 rebounds and 17 points for Superior.

The Saints will next be in action Saturday in Superior when they face Concordia College, Moorhead at 5:30 p.m. in the fourth Annual Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
