Saints Rally, but Fall in OT to Warhawks

Box Score WHITEWATER, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team scored a pair of second half goals after trailing 2-0 at halftime to 16th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. However, the Warhawks netted the game winner just 40 seconds into the first overtime to end the Saints' season in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The first 45 minutes belonged to Warhawks, out-shooting the Saints 14-3 in the half. Whitewater got its first goal in the 22nd minute when Sierra High scored directly off the corner kick. The Warhawks extended their lead to 2-0 on an Emma Guilfoil tally.

The second half was complete opposite of the first half as the Saints controlled, outshooting the Warhawks 11-1. Shannon Carlson (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) got CSS on the board with a strike from outside the box to make it 2-1 in the 69th minute. Amy Heilman (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS) was credited with the assist.

Logan Williamson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored the equalizer in the 79th minute when she headed in a Carlson free kick. The Saints then would have a Kelsey Kehtel (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) goal disallowed with less than four minutes to play due to an offside call. The contest went to overtime tied 2-2.

The overtime period would only last 40 seconds as Brianna Reid scored the game-winner for the Warhawks to give Whitewater the 3-2 victory.

Whitewater had a slight edge in shots 16-14. Kelsey Reeves (Eagle River, Alaska/Eagle River HS ) made four saves in the loss for the Saints. Jordan Myers had nine saves for the Warhawks. Whitewater (17-0-4) moves on to the second round where it will face the winner of University of Chicago and Capital University.

The Saints (18-3-1) will say goodbye to eight seniors: Carlson, Williamson, Lauren Lynch (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS), Maggie Dolan (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS), Lauryn Wilson (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South HS), Taylor Cunningham (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS), Claire Lubansky (Chaska, Minn./Chaska HS) and Kallie Thomas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS).
