Morrin Shines As Saints Overpower LumberJills

| By:
Box Score ASHLAND, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team rebounded from a difficult home loss to Bethany Lutheran last Saturday by defeating Northland College on the road in straight sets, 25-16, 25-16 and 25-6.

For CSS, Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) stepped up in the absence of the injured Gloria Ohaju (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS), recording a team high 18 kills and just one error. Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) recorded 15 assists for the Saints in the victory.

The first set saw CSS jump out to an early 5-1 lead as three different Saints recorded kills. Northland would battle back to bring the set to 9-7, but a pair of Morrin kills and a Kariana DeYoung (Deer River, Minn./Deer River HS) kill pushed the lead to 13-7. St. Scholastica would later go on a 5-0 run to push the score to 21-11, and the Saints would eventually close out the set 25-16.

Set two would begin similarly to the first, as CSS took a quick 4-1 lead. The teams would exchange points and bring the score to 9-6 in favor of the Saints. However, the Saints would respond with a 5-1 run to push the scoreboard to 14-7, led by three Morrin kills. Yet the LumberJills came back with a rally of their own, pushing the score to 17-13 and forcing a CSS timeout. Out of the timeout, St. Scholastica would score three quick points, prompting a Northland timeout. Northland would rebound with three straight of their own, but CSS would prove to be too much, finishing the set on a 5-0 run. Morrin recorded four of the final five kills for the Saints, who won the second set 25-16.

St. Scholastica would dominate the third set, jumping out to an early 7-1 lead and forcing a LumberJill timeout. However, the timeout would have little effect, as CSS continued to pound Northland and opened up a large 17-4 lead. A second Northland timeout could not halt the Saints' momentum, as Morrin and DeYoung tallied six kills to close out the set and the match 25-6.

The win brings the Saints to 7-9 on the season (4-3 UMAC). The LumberJills fall to 1-18 on the season (0-7 UMAC). Next up for the Saints is a trip to Wisconsin as CSS takes on UW-River Falls on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Eau Claire.
