Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's volleyball team fell to Northwestern by a score 4-1 on Friday at the Reif Gymnasium.
The Saints would jump out to a 7-2 lead in the first set, but the Eagles would come back to stay close with the score 15-14 in favor of CSS. However, the Saints would pull away by going on a 5-1 run and closed out the set up 25-20.
The second set was tied up at five-all when Northwestern went on an 8-1 run to go up 13-6. The Saints would battle back, however, and add eight points to the Eagles' two to tie things up at 21-21. However, Northwestern would rally and take the final two points and the set by a score of 25-23.
Northwestern took control of the third set by going up 9-0. The Saints would gain some ground, but it was not enough as the Eagles would take the set 25-14.
In the fourth and final set, the Saints and Northwestern exchanged the lead eight times and tied up the set sixteen times. Northwestern would close out the set by again taking the final two points and the set 25-23.
Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) led the Saints with 20 kills, while
Noelle Elvehjem (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) added 11 kills.
Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) was credited for 33 assists and
Alex Barsody (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) led CSS with 18 digs. Lizzy Potratz led Northwestern (17-11, 10-1 UMAC) with 16 kills.
CSS (9-14, 5-5 UMAC) will look to get back in the win column when it faces North Central on Saturday. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the Reif Gymnasium. All of the action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
