Women’s Basketball's Struggles at Northland Continue

Box Score ASHLAND, Wis. (csssaints.com) – For the seventh straight time, the St. Scholastica women's basketball team lost a game in Ashland, falling to Northland College 55-49 on Tuesday night in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opener.

Both teams exchanged the lead for the first eight minutes of the ball game as Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) scored six of the first 10 points for CSS. The Saints led 17-12 after a Haley Hoyer (Pelican Rapids, Minn./Pelican Rapids HS (North Dakota State College of Science)) 3-pointer with nine minutes to go in the half. The LumberJills (2-6, 0-1 UMAC) responded with an 8-0 run to regain the lead. The Saints re-took the lead with a 7-0 run and went into halftime with a 26-25 advantage.

The Saints shot 39 percent from the floor in the half, while the 'Jills shot 34 percent. The first half featured five ties and three lead changes.

CSS led 37-32 with 13:44 left in the game when Northland scored six straight points to take the lead. Later with the Saints up three, the LumberJills went on a 7-0 run to make it 45-41 Northland with 7:27 on the clock.

With the 'Jills up three, Sammy Doucette (Colfax, Wis./Colfax HS (UW-River Falls)) drained a 3-pointer to tie the contest at 49-49 with 1:11 remaining. The LumberJills answered with a layup on the ensuing possession and would hold the Saints scoreless the rest of the game to win by a score of 55-49.

The Saints shot only 27 percent from the field in the second half to finish at 32 percent for the game. Northland shot 53 percent from the floor in the second half to finish at 41 percent.

CSS had a 22-11 advantage on the offensive glass, but only outscored the 'Jills 9-4 in second-chance points. Northland, who came into the game leading the conference in 3-pointers attempted, outscored the Saints 30-20 in the paint.

Frase just missed a double-double with a game-high 20 points and a team-best nine rebounds for the Saints. Elena Huber (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) and Haley Hoyer (Pelican Rapids, Minn./Pelican Rapids HS (North Dakota State College of Science)) each added seven points from the bench. Sara Hoge led the LumberJills with 15 points.

The Saints (3-9, 0-1 UMAC) will be at home this weekend as they host conference preseason No. 1 University of Minnesota Morris on Friday and Crown College on Saturday. The Morris game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. All of the action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
