Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team outshot Gustavus Adolphus College 32-21, but the Gusties managed to get a goal in each period and hung on for the 3-2 nonconference victory on Saturday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
Gustavus (8-6-1) got on the board first at the end of the first period when Gustav Bengtson scored with five seconds left on the power-play to give the Gusties a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
The Gusties extended their lead to two, less than three minutes into the second period on a Schyler Adams even-strength goal. The Saints got their first goal of the night with 8:14 left in the second period when
Bobby Lipsett (Salmon Arm, British Columbia/Salmon Arm Secondary (Salmon Arm-BCHL) ) put home a rebound to make it 2-1 Gustavus.
Garet Chumley (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS (Jersey-EJHL) ) and
Ryne Bodger (Duncan, British Columbia/Cowichan Secondary (Merritt-BCHL) ) had the assists.
It remained 3-2 until another Gustavus power-play goal with 11 minutes left in the third period put CSS back down two goals.
Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) made the score 3-2 with 3:04 left in regulation with his seventh goal of the season. His brother,
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ), and
Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) were credited with the assists. The Saints went with an empty net for the final minute, but were unable to convert as the Gusties hung on for the 3-2 victory.
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) made 18 saves in the loss for the Saints, while Tyler Venne had 30 saves to earn the win for Gustavus. Both teams combined for nine penalties with the Saints matching a season-low with four on the night.
The Saints (4-10-0) will continue their home stand next weekend when they get back to conference action and host the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for a two-game series at Mars Lakeview Arena.
