Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team never trailed in a 4-2 nonconference victory over Augsburg College on Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The Saints got things going two minutes into the game when
Tyler Miller (Fort Frances, Ontario/Rainy River HS (Thunder Bay-SIJHL) ) scored an even-strength goal with
Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) credited with the assist.
Just over two minutes later,
Alex Valenti (Blaine, Wash./Bellingham HS (Merritt-BCHL) ) skated in on the right side of the goal and hit the back of the net to make it 2-0 Saints. Miller and Corcoran earned the assists. The Auggies (3-9-1) got one back with eight minutes to go when Ben McClellan scored on breakaway, short-handed, to make it 2-1 at the first intermission.
The second period did not see much even-strength action as both teams combined for eight penalties. Augsburg would tie it up on the power-play midway through the period when Lucas Hendrickson struck a slap shot from the point that found the net to make it 2-2.
CSS regained the lead one minute and five seconds later when
Brenden Kotyk (Regina, Saskatchewan/Michael A. Riffel HS (Dauphin-MJHL) ) scored on the power-play.
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) earned the assist. The score remained that way until the third period when
Cody Danychuk (Biggar, Saskatchewan/Biggar HS (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) added insurance for the Saints, putting in a
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) rebound to make it 4-2 with seven minutes to go. That is how it would end, as St. Scholastica ends a five-game home losing streak.
The Saints outshot the Auggies 40-27.
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) made 25 saves to earn the win CSS, while Justin Luchner had 36 saves in the loss for Augsburg. Both teams combined for 17 penalties totaling 50 minutes.
The Saints (4-9-0) will be at home again tomorrow night, this time against Gustavus Adolphus College. Action gets underway at 7 p.m. at Mars Lakeview Arena. All of the action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
