Bruggeman Earns First Win as Men’s Hockey Beats #15 Pointers

| By:
Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – Freshman Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) made 31 saves and the St. Scholastica men's hockey team scored three power-play goals to defeat 15th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 4-3 on Saturday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.

The win snaps a five-game losing streak to the Pointers at Mars Lakeview Arena. CSS also snaps an eight-game conference winless streak.

The Pointers (11-7-1, 5-6-1 NCHA) would score first tonight as Scott Henegar netted a power-play goal with nine minutes left in the period. The Saints knotted the game up 35 seconds later on a Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) goal. His brother, Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ), was credited with the assist.

CSS took the lead with 4:34 left in the opening period on a nice Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) power-play goal. Eric Kraft (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS (Lake Superior State) ) and Brenden Bradbury (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Monticello HS/Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) earned the assists. That was the score at the first intermission.

Henegar scored another power-play goal with less than seven minutes remaining in the second period to tie the game at 2-2. Henegar finished with four goals in the series.

Stevens Point then received back-to-back penalties and the Saints would have a two-man advantage. CSS made the most of it as Brenden Kotyk (Regina, Saskatchewan/Michael A. Riffel HS (Dauphin-MJHL) ) scored one power-play goal to give the Saints the lead again with 3:10 left in the second. Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) scored his second of the night 19 seconds later on the second power-play to make it a 4-2 St Scholastica lead at the second intermission.

Tyler Miller (Fort Frances, Ontario/Rainy River HS (Thunder Bay-SIJHL) ) and Garet Chumley (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS (Jersey-EJHL) ) assisted Kotyk's goal, while Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) and Bradbury assisted the other.

The Pointers cut the margin to one quickly in the third period as Kyle Heck scored one minute and 25 seconds in. With the score still 4-3 late, the Saints would receive a five-minute major penalty and be on the penalty kill for the final two minutes and six seconds.

The St. Scholastica penalty-kill did its job, as Bruggeman had to make just one save during that time frame as the Saints prevailed 4-3.

The Pointers outshot the Saints 34-27 in the loss. Brandon Jaeger had 23 saves for UWSP.

The Saints (5-11-0, 2-8-0 NCHA) will be at home on Tuesday night against future conference opponent Northland College. The action is set to begin at 7 p.m. at Mars Lakeview Arena. All of the action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
