Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team fell behind 4-0 at the first intermission, but got within a goal in the third period before falling 5-3 to 15th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The first 16 minutes of the contest went scoreless until the Pointers exploded, netting four goals in a two minute and 28 second span to take a 4-0 lead at the first intermission.
St. Scholastica got its first goal of the night with less than eight minutes left in the second period when
Garet Chumley (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS (Jersey-EJHL) ) scored on the power-play.
Brenden Kotyk (Regina, Saskatchewan/Michael A. Riffel HS (Dauphin-MJHL) ) and
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) were credited with the assists.
The third period was controlled by the Saints, outshooting the Pointers 15-3. CSS made it interesting when
Alex Valenti (Blaine, Wash./Bellingham HS (Merritt-BCHL) ) scored five minutes into the period and
Cody Danychuk (Biggar, Saskatchewan/Biggar HS (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) tallied another, one minute and three seconds later to make it 4-3.
Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) assisted Valenti's goal and
Chris Sinclair (Fort Frances, Ontario/Beaver Brae Secondary (Fort Frances-SIJHL) ) had the assist for Danyschuk's.
However, the Pointers would receive a power-play goal from Scott Heneger with less than nine minutes remaining to make the final 5-3.
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) picked up the loss, stopping 15 shots in the first period before being replaced.
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) then filled in and stopped 11 shots the rest of the way. Brandon Jaeger made 36 saves to earn the victory over Stevens Point. CSS outshot UWSP 39-31 in the contest.
The Saints (4-11-1, 1-8-0 NCHA) and Pointers (11-6-1, 5-5-1 NCHA) will do it again tomorrow at Mars Lakeview Arena at 7 p.m. All of the action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
