Volleyball Splits on Final Day of Augsburg Invite

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team dropped its first match Saturday morning to the host Augsburg Auggies in four sets, but ended on a high note with a three-set sweep of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at the 31st annual Augsburg College Invitational.

Against the Auggies (6-2), the Saints fell behind 6-2 in the opening set and could never recover as Augsburg took it 25-19. In the second set, the Saints fell behind again 8-2 as the Auggies took control with a 25-15 set win.

The third set was tight throughout with 14 ties and eight lead changes, but the Saints fought off one match point to stay alive. A kill by Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) and a pair of kills by Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)), along with an attack error by the Auggies gave the Saints the third set 27-25.

The fourth set was also tight with 12 ties and eight lead changes. The roles would be reversed however as the Saints had a pair of set points to force a fifth set, but the Auggies stormed back and won four straight points to win the set and the match 26-24.

Morrin led the way with 10 kills for CSS. Megan Windschitl (Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS) was next with seven kills. Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) recorded 22 assists and Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) led the way with 17 digs. Zyvoloski also had six block assists. Colleen Ourada had 17 kills to pace the Auggies. Augsburg ended up winning the invite with a perfect 4-0 record.

In CSS's final match of the Augsburg Invitational, the Saints were able to pull out a win and sweep the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 25-23, 25-16, 27-25.

Zyvoloski led the Saints with 11 kills. She would be named to the all-tournament team. Jenny Kienzle (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) had a team-high 16 digs and Windschitl recorded six block assists. Birkeland also added 23 assists. The Blugolds (5-4) were led by Kelly Schuh with 13 kills.

The Saints have won two straight against UW-Eau Claire after the dropping the previous 19 in a row to the Blugolds.

The Saints (5-4) will be off until next Saturday when they take part in the UW-River Falls Invitational. CSS will open with UW-Whitewater at 10 a.m. and then face the host, UW-River Falls, at 4 p.m.
