Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team lost in three sets to 18th-ranked College of Saint Benedict to begin Friday and then fell in four sets to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the night cap on day one of the Augsburg Tournament.
The Saints were playing their second consecutive ranked opponent when they opened with 18th-ranked St. Ben's this afternoon. CSS fell to 14th-ranked University of Chicago in four sets on Tuesday night.
The Blazers (5-1) controlled the opening set, winning 25-15 and continued rolling taking set two 25-21 and the closing out the match in set three 25-18.
Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) led the team with 12 kills with
Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) adding six kills and
Taylor Tyllia (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) with five kills.
Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) added 28 assists and
Danielle Benusa (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) had a team-high 13 digs.
St. Ben's had a .440 attack percentage in the opening set and were led by Alexa Rinde with 12 kills. The Saints defeated the Blazers in the first round of last year's NCAA Tournament in five sets. The teams will meet up one more time this season in Duluth in mid-October.
CSS began a little better in its match against UW-Stevens Point, winning the first set 25-21. However, the Pointers (4-1) took the next two tightly contested sets 25-23 in both and finished off the Saints in the fourth set 25-12.
Zyvoloski's 14 kills led the way again for the Saints. She needs only 10 more kills to reach 1,100 in her time at St. Scholastica. Morrin chipped in with eight kills. Birkeland recorded 27 assists and Benusa had 18 digs. Christina Brinkman led the Pointers with 12 kills.
The Saints (4-3) will have two more matches tomorrow at the Augsburg Invitational as they open with the host, Auggies at 11 a.m. and then face the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 3 p.m. The Augsburg contest can be seen live on Saints Sports Net, courtesy of Augsburg.
