Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team lost to conference rival Northwestern College in four sets on Saturday afternoon in the Reif Gymnasium.
The loss for the Saints at home is the first since losing to Northwestern in the 2010 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship match.
The Eagles (10-5, 2-0 UMAC) came out strong in the opening set and ultimately took the set by a score of 25-17. The Saints responded in the second set, scoring the first three points of the set. However, the Eagles battled back and took a 12-10 lead. The Saints used a 9-2 run to regain control and take the second set 25-21.
The third set featured 10 ties and four lead changes. Northwestern had a 22-16 lead in the set and eventually had two set points, but the Saints fought off both and scored three straight points to have a set point of their own.
However, the Eagles fought off a set point and scored the next two points. After the Saints kept the set alive, fighting off their third set point, the Eagles eventually took control to take the set 28-26.
In the fourth set, the Eagles used a 6-0 run early and would eventually finish off the Saints by taking the set and the match 25-16.
Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) led the Saints a season-high 28 kills on 60 attack attempts.
Taylor Tyllia (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) added a season-high 12 kills.
Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) had 44 assists and
Jenny Kienzle (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) led the team with 20 digs. Kendra Korporal led the Eagles with 18 kills.
The Saints (6-8, 1-1 UMAC) will be back on the road next weekend when they face the University of Minnesota Morris on Friday night and Crown College on Saturday. The Morris match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
