Volleyball Suffers a Pair of Setbacks in River Falls

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Invitational on Saturday, falling to 10th-ranked UW-Whitewater in four sets and then to the host, UW-River Falls, in five.

In the first match, the Warhawks edged the Saints in the first set 25-23 and then cruised in set two 25-14. CSS kept the match going by taking the third set 25-18, but the Warhawks closed it out in four by taking the fourth set 25-15.

Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) led the Saints with 13 kills. Taylor Tyllia (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) added seven kills. Jenny Kienzle (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) had a team-high 22 digs and Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) recorded 28 assists. Whitewater improved to 9-4 overall with the win.

In the second match, the Saints quickly dropped the first two sets to the Falcons 25-22 and 25-16. However, CSS was resilient taking set three 25-19 and set four 25-18. Unfortunately the home team ended the rally by taking the fifth-and-deciding set 15-11.

It was Zyvoloski leading the Saints again with 18 kills and Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) also in double-figures with 11 kills. Zyvoloski was named to the all-tournament for her two performances today. Tannyr Heyl (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS (Saint Benedict)) led the team with 20 digs, followed by Kienzle's 19 digs. Birkeland had 34 assists. The Falcons improved to 11-2 with the victory.

The Saints (5-6) will have their first action in the Twin Ports on Tuesday when they travel across the bridge to take on the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Action is slated to begin at 8 p.m. The Saints will also have a J.V. match against Lakehead University at 6 p.m.
