Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – St. Scholastica sophomore
Kelsey Kehtel (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored four goals while juniors
Taylor Cunningham (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) and
Shannon Carlson (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) added two assists apiece as the women's soccer team defeated Crown College 6-0 in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) contest at Saints Field on Friday.
The Saints improved to 3-2-1 on the season (2-0-0 UMAC), while Crown falls to 2-3-0 overall (0-1-0 UMAC). The Saints are now 26-0-0 all time against Crown and have tallied 17 goals in their past two games.
The Saints offensive outburst has been fueled by three hat tricks in two games. Last year's UMAC Offensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year Awards winner Kehtel recorded four goals today, while Carlson and senior
Andrea Beatt (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) had three apiece against Northland on Tuesday.
On a cool September afternoon, the Saints picked up right where they left off on Tuesday, peppering the Crown defense with 23 shots, but ending the half up just 1-0 off on what would prove to be Kehtel's first of four goals at 44:00. However, the Saints' offensive attack began to break down the Storm defense in the second half, with senior
Joey Moore (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Carlson tallying goals in the 46th and 48th minutes.
Kehtel then recorded back-to-back-to back goals just a few minutes apart in the 55th and 58th minutes to extend the CSS lead to 6-0. Carlson was credited with two assists, while juniors
Logan Williamson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and
Taylor Cunningham (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) each chipped in an assist apiece. The Saints racked up seven assists in the game, bringing their season total to 20, over three times as many as their opponents.
CSS freshman keeper
Kelsey Reeves (Eagle River, Alaska/Eagle River HS ) recorded the first shutout of her collegiate career as the Saints defense didn't allow a shot on goal for the second consecutive game. Crown keeper Hillary Brondsema recorded 15 saves as the Saints outshot the Storm 43-0. The Saints also set a program record with 21 corner kicks.
The Saints hope to continue their hot streak and remain unbeaten at home tomorrow as they host the University of Minnesota Morris for their homecoming game at noon at Saints Field. All of the action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
