Women’s Soccer Ties 14th-ranked Cobbers

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with 14th-ranked Concordia College-Moorhead on Saturday in the Advantage Emblem Cup at Saints Field.

Even though the two teams tied, the Cobbers still captured the Advantage Emblem Cup based on points 13-12.

The Saints got up on the Cobbers early as Logan Williamson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) struck again for the second consecutive game. Williamson took the corner kick in the eighth minute and the ball bended back toward the net and would deflect off the goalkeeper and into the net. The Saints went into halftime with the 1-0 advantage.

The Cobbers (1-0-1) equalized less than five minutes into the second half as All-American Sarah Rounds would hit a strike into the net. Rounds would also be named the tournament's MVP. The Cobbers kept on peppering the Saints in the half, but Kelsey Reeves (Eagle River, Alaska/Eagle River HS ) played well again in net, making 12 saves on the day.

After 90 minutes, the game went to overtime as the Saints had their best scoring opportunity in the second part of overtime as Shannon Carlson (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) beat the 'keeper and it appeared to go in the net, but it actually the top, backside of the net. The game would end in a 1-1 tie.

The Cobbers outshot the Saints 27-8 in the contest, but only 50 percent were on net. Ali Nelson made four saves for the Cobbers.

Williamson, Alexi Bopray (River Falls, Wis./River Falls HS) and Reeves were named to the all-tournament team for the Saints. 

The Saints (1-0-1) will travel to Northfield next weekend to play both St. Olaf College and Carleton College. The Saints will open with the Oles on Saturday at 2 p.m.
