Early Goal Dooms Men’s Soccer in Loss

| By:
Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team dropped its season opener on Friday to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 1-0 with the lone goal coming in the first two minutes of the game.

Bob Shone headed in the Warhawks' first corner kick of the game, into the far post one minute and 56 seconds into the contest.

The Saints had a great chance to equalize two minutes later as Rob Johnson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) beat the 'keeper, but a Whitewater player cleared the ball off the line just before it was about to go in. The Warhawks outshot the Saints 7-4 in the first half.

Much of the second half was played in the midfield, but CSS goalkeeper Adam Hewitt (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic HS) made a few spectacular saves to keep the Saints within one goal. The Saints had scoring chances late, but could not find the back of the net as Whitewater prevailed 1-0.

CSS had a 5-3 shot advantage in the second half, but the Warhawks had the slight edge for the game 10-9. Hewitt made five saves in the loss, while Matt Mikesell made a pair of saves to earn the shutout for Whitewater. This was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

The Saints will face Macalester College tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. at Saints Field. The Scots fell to UW-Superior 2-1 today. All of the action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
