DULUTH, Minn. – The 13th-ranked St. Scholastica men's hockey team fell behind in the first minute and could not recover as the sixth-ranked St. Norbert College Green Knights went on to defeat the Saints 3-1 Saturday evening at Mars Lakeview Arena.

After being shutout last night, it did not take long for the Green Knights to strike as Johan Ryd scored 59 seconds into the game to give St. Norbert an early 1-0. The Green Knights controlled the action in the first period and outshot CSS 11-6.

St. Norbert added to its lead in the second period as Alain Joanette intercepted a CSS pass and put the puck in the net off of a breakaway eight minutes into the period to make it 2-0. Derek Donohoe extended the margin to 3-0 on a goal with less than nine minutes left in the period to make the score 3-0 Green Knights at the second intermission.

St. Scholastica was hoping to put another rally together like they did against University of Wisconsin-Superior over a week ago as Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) scored with 8:36 remaining in the game. Brenden Bradbury (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Monticello HS/Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) and Chad Golanowski (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll HS (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) had the assists.

However, there would be no comeback today as the Green Knights prevailed 3-1.

The Saints ended up outshooting St. Norbert 29-28, but the Green Knights had the advantage in number of quality opportunities. Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) finished with 25 saves for the Saints, while David Jacobson had 28 saves for the Green Knights (13-5-5, 10-4-2 NCHA). Both teams went a combined 0-for-8 on the power-play.

With the loss, the Saints have been eliminated from getting the first seed in the NCHA Peters Cup Playoffs. However, with a UW-Superior loss tonight, they can clinch home ice for the quarterfinal series in a couple of weeks.

The Saints (12-7-4, 7-5-4 NCHA) will finish up the regular season on the road next weekend when it faces both the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Friday night and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday night. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and both can be heard live on csssaints.com.
