PREVIEW: Women’s Basketball Traveling Back to Morris for UMAC Semifinals

DULUTH, Minn. – After just facing the University of Minnesota-Morris last Friday, the St. Scholastica women's basketball team will be back in Morris on Wednesday night for the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament semifinals.

The Saints split their final two game of the regular season, falling at Minnesota-Morris on Friday night, but responding to defeat Presentation College in overtime on Saturday. In the game vs. Presentation, Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) sunk the game-winning free throws in the waning seconds and also led the team with 16 points and 12 rebounds. She came four steals shy from recording a triple-double.

St. Scholastica Saints (12-13, 10-4 UMAC)
The Saints return to the UMAC Tournament after missing it completely last season … CSS will once again be the three-seed as they were in 2010 when they fell to Presentation College at home … At that time, the tournament was a six-team tourney … The Saints were 3-4 in conference play and 4-10 for the season away from Reif Gymnasium … With Saturday's overtime win over Presentation to close out the regular season, the Saints have won multiple overtime games in a season for the first time since the 2002-03 season … Their first OT win this year came at home against Minnesota-Morris … CSS has been led by freshman guard Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) all season in 18 games … She is averaging 12.3 points per game and 13.6 points in conference games alone … Hovick was also second on the team with 118 rebounds during the regular season … Laura Amys (South Range, Wis./Superior HS) led the team in rebounds (180) and led the conference with 1.9 blocked shots per game … The Saints led the conference in field goal percentage defense (.370), while Morris led the league in field goal percentage (.424) … The Saints also led the conference in steals(11.7 per game), while Morris led the league in turnover margin (+2.75).

Minnesota-Morris Cougars (17-8, 12-2 UMAC)
The Cougars finished as co-regular season champions, garnering that title for the third straight year and winners of their last eight games … However, the Cougars would lose the No. 1 seed to Martin Luther College by way of a coin flip as both the Cougars and Knights tied in every tiebreaker scenario … Morris is led by Emily Mehr, who is the reigning three-time UMAC Player of the Week … Against the Saints on Friday night, Mehr set a career-high with 31 points, going 10-of-15 from the floor, including a 3-of-3 mark from behind the arc as well as an 8-of-8 performance at the line … Mehr leads the conference, making 51-percent of her shots from the floor … Kelsey Erickson also leads the UMAC with a 1.5 assist-to-turnover ratio … Kendra Wycoff is second in the conference with 58, 3-pointers made on the year … Morris is 8-3 at home this season and had its lone conference loss at home to Martin Luther in January … The Cougars led the conference in scoring, averaging 72.3 points per game and second in scoring defense, allowing only 61.7 points per game.
