ISHPEMING, Mich. – For the second consecutive day,
Sharmila Ahmed (Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) led the St. Scholastica women's Nordic skiing team to a fourth place finish on Saturday in the 10km classic race at the NCAA Central Regional Championships at the Al Quaal Ski Area.
Ahmed did not crack the top 10 today, but finished 12th overall with a time of 33:36.5.
Brooke Adams (Spooner, Wis./Spooner HS ) was 22nd with a time of 35:12.4 and
Eleanor Magnuson (Champlin Park, Minn./Champlin Park HS) was the final Saint to score in 23rd with a time of 35:20.6. For Magnuson, she wraps up her skiing career at St. Scholastica with four all-region accolades.
“Sharmila finished strong, but her fall today probably cost her a shot at the top 10,” said head coach
Chad Salmela.
Northern Michigan took first place for the second consecutive day with five skiers in the top six. Today, Monica Markvardsen won the event with a time of 32:50. The Wildcats finished with 87 points. The University of Alaska Fairbanks was second with 78 points, Michigan Tech University was third with 68 points and the Saints finished with 57 points.
“This was a big step this year by the women's program,” said Salmela. “I think they felt they didn't race to their potential all year and still consistently finished fourth and that is a huge step forward for the program.”
The Saints wrap up their sixth season as a program with one of its best years in program history. They had just one race where they didn't finish fourth all season. For future CSS women's Nordic skiing news be sure to check csssaints.com.
