Men’s Basketball Unable to Hold Halftime Lead in Loss to UWS

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team saw an 11-point halftime lead slip away in a 64-59 New Year's Eve home loss to the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Monday night.

The Saints scored the first four points of tonight's contest, but the 'jackets would take a 7-6 advantage with four minutes gone by. Midway through the half, CSS went on an 8-0 run to take a 20-11 lead.

After UWS (5-8) cut the margin to three, the Saints went on an 8-2 run. St. Scholastica led by as much as 14 until Johnquez Brooks drained a long 3-pointer at the end of the half to make the halftime score 39-28 Saints.

The Saints shot 46 percent from the floor in the half and were 7-for-8 from the free throw line. The Yellowjackets shot 39 percent from the field. CSS outscored UWS 24-14 in the paint and 13-6 in second-chance points.

The second half saw the Saints make just two field goals in the first 14 minutes, including going without a field goal for over nine minutes.

A Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) layup made the score 44-34 CSS with 15:33 on the clock. When Derek Steve (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS) made a jumper with 6:16 left, the Yellowjackets had gone on a 19-1 run and had taken the lead at 53-47. During that time, CSS committed a flagrant foul and had a technical foul.

Tester cut the lead to one with four minutes to go, but the Saints would commit an intentional foul, which led to a four-point possession for the 'jackets and a five-point lead. UWS closed out the Saints from there, winning 64-59.

The Saints shot just 22 percent in the second half to finish at 34 percent for the game. The Yellowjackets finished at 36 percent for the game and made nine 3-pointers. CSS was 3-for-19 from beyond the arc.

Jonah Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) led the Saints with 16 points. He also matched a team-high with eight rebounds and had a team-best five assists. Tester added 14 points and Trevor Morlock (Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS (Minn., Crookston)) had eight rebounds. Jarrod Peterson had 19 points to lead the Yellowjackets.

The Saints (2-9) will be in action eight days from today when they open Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play at Northland College next Tuesday night. Tip-off for that game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
