Second Half Struggles Doom Saints

| By:
Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team was within five points for most of the game, until Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers used a 9-0 run midway through the second half to put any hopes away of a CSS comeback as the Cobbers went on to defeat the Saints 81-59 Saturday afternoon at the Reif Gymnasium.

The contest started with Concordia and CSS traded baskets throughout most of the first half.  The biggest lead for either team was five points.  The lead changed merely every other possession as both teams matched baskets from start to finish of the first half.

The second half continued with the same pace, but at the 13:53 mark, the Cobbers would use a 9-0 run to go up by 12 points.  The Saints would never recover from this quick run and Concordia eventually jumped out to a 20 point lead before winning the game 81-59.

Concordia-Moorhead (5-4) was led by Brandon Fisher with 20 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double.  Dewon McKenzie chipped in 15 points and had 5 steals.  Andrew Martinson added 16 points off of the bench.

The Cobbers finished the game shooting 50-percent from the field (31-62), 36-percent from beyond the arc (5-14), and 82-percent from the free-throw line (14-17).

The Cobbers would grab 42 total rebounds, block four shots, accumulate nine steals and commit 13 turnovers.

CSS was led by Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) and Jonah Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS), each scoring 12 points apiece.  Freshman Mike Spoden (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) sparked the Saints with nine points off of the bench.

The Saints would finish the game shooting 35-percent from the field (19-54), 33-percent from beyond the arc (2-6), and 79-percent from the free-throw line (19-24).

The Saints would grab 31 total rebounds, block three shots, garner nine steals, and commit 16 turnovers.

Concordia had a 20-11 advantage on points off turnovers, 17-6 in second chance points, 26-19 advantage in bench points, 42-30 advantage in points in the paint, and an 8-0 advantage in fast break points.

CSS (2-8) will face UW-Superior on Dec. 31 here at the Reif Gymnasium for the final 2012 border battle game between the crosstown rivals.  That game is set to start at 6 p.m. local time and can be hear live on Saints Sports Net on csssaints.com
