Box Score PELLA, Iowa (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was defeated on Friday afternoon by a score of 70-63 at Central College (Iowa).
The Saints went without a made field goal for the first four minutes of the game and made just two field goals in the first seven minutes (two, 3-pointers), but took a 9-8 lead at the 12:51 mark on a
Kayla Heisler (Remer, Minn./Northland HS) jumper.
The Dutch (7-3) then went on a little spurt to take a six-point lead midway through the half. A Heisler 3-pointer made it a five-point game with less than a minute to go in the half, but Central scored the final five points of the period to take a 36-26 halftime lead.
The Saints shot 35 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, while the Dutch were at 45 percent. Central had a 16-8 edge in the paint in the half, but the Saints' bench outscored the Dutch 16-1. CSS was just 2-for-6 from the free throw line in the half, while the Dutch were 7-for-10.
With the Central lead at nine with less than 17 minutes to go in the second half, the Dutch went on a 16-3 run over a seven minute span to widen their lead to 59-37. St. Scholastica responded with a 7-0 run to get the margin down to 15, but could not get much closer until late as the final score would be 70-63 in favor of Central.
The Saints shot 38 percent for the game and 54 percent from the free throw line (14-26). The Dutch finished at 44 percent and were not much better from the charity stripe at 59 percent (17-29). Central outscored the Saints 21-12 in points off turnovers and 28-20 in the paint.
Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) finished with a season-high 15 points in the loss for CSS. Schellbach also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Sammy Doucette (Colfax, Wis./Colfax HS (UW-River Falls)) also matched a season-high with 13 points in the loss. Alyssa Schwartz had a game-high 21 points for the Dutch.
The Saints (3-7) will head over to Oskaloosa, Iowa tomorrow to face William Penn University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
