WINONA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team gave up four special teams goals, including two short-handed in a 5-2 loss at Saint Mary's University Saturday night.
The Cardinals jumped ahead of the Saints six minutes into the game with a power-play goal by Bob Marx. They added to that lead with five minutes left in the period when Scott Deur scored short-handed to make it 2-0.
The Saints got on the board with 2:09 left in the period as
Ryne Bodger (Duncan, British Columbia/Cowichan Secondary (Merritt-BCHL) ) scored an even-strength goal with an assist from
Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ).
The Cardinals widened the margin back to two goals early in the second period as it was another short-handed goal this time by Austin Balko two minutes and 11 seconds into the period. Bobby Thompson for Saint Mary's scored 40 seconds later on the power-play to make it 4-1.
Chris Sinclair (Fort Frances, Ontario/Beaver Brae Secondary (Fort Frances-SIJHL) ) got his first goal of the season eight seconds after the Thompson goal to make it 4-2.
Chad Golanowski (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll HS (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) had the assist. That would be the score at the second intermission.
Saint Mary's (2-2-0) scored its lone even-strength goal of the night four minutes into the second period on a Nick Nagel goal to make the final score 5-2.
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) had 40 saves in the loss for the Saints, while Christian Gaffy had 15 saves in the win for the Cardinals. Both teams combined for 23 penalties and 57 penalty minutes. Saint Mary's was 2-for-11 on the power-play and the Saints were 0-for-9.
The Saints (1-3-0) will have their home opener next weekend when they welcome the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire to Mars Lakeview Arena for a two-game series. Action begins Friday night at 7 p.m. All of the action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
