Men’s Hockey Snaps Losing Streak with Big Win over Lawrence

Nowakowski and Kotyk each record four points

Box Score DE PERE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team ended a five-game losing skid, defeating Lawrence University 9-2 on Friday in the MCHA/NCHA Thanksgiving Showcase at the Cornerstone Community Center.

The Saints, who had scored just nine goals in their previous four games, hit that number today, marking the fourth time in the last five seasons CSS has scored at least nine goals in a game.

The scoring started just one minute and 19 seconds into the game as Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) put one in the net with Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) assisting. Three minutes later, the Saints made it 2-0 on a Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) goal. Nowakowski and Brenden Kotyk (Regina, Saskatchewan/Michael A. Riffel HS (Dauphin-MJHL) ) had the assists.

Chad Golanowski (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll HS (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) scored 36 seconds later to give St. Scholastica a 3-0 lead at the first intermission. Tyler Miller (Fort Frances, Ontario/Rainy River HS (Thunder Bay-SIJHL) ) and Chris Sinclair (Fort Frances, Ontario/Beaver Brae Secondary (Fort Frances-SIJHL) ) were credited with the assists.

It took only 32 seconds into the second period for the Saints to tally their fourth goal as Nowakowski scored with assists coming from Kotyk and Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ). Nowakowski scored again five minutes into the period to make it 5-0. Marcoux and Bruce had the assists.

Corcoran scored with 11 minutes left in the period to extend the lead to 6-0. Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) and Ryne Bodger (Duncan, British Columbia/Cowichan Secondary (Merritt-BCHL) ) registered assists. Lawrence (2-5-0) got a power-play goal to make it 6-1 at the second intermission.

Bobby Lipsett (Salmon Arm, British Columbia/Salmon Arm Secondary (Salmon Arm-BCHL) ) netted his first of the season to begin the third period and Kotyk scored a pair of power-play goals to give the Saints a 9-1 lead. The Vikings added a late goal to make the final 9-2.

CSS outshot Lawrence 49-18 and scored four power-play goals. The Vikings committed 14 penalties for 31 minutes.

Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) made 16 saves to earn the win for the Saints, while Michael Baldino had 40 saves in the loss for the Vikings.

The Saints (2-5-0) will be at the Cornerstone again tomorrow afternoon when they play Marian University (Wis.). The puck drops at 3:30 p.m.
