Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team was unable to hold multiple one-goal leads and was defeated once again in game two of the NCHA series against the 11th ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds by a score of 7-5 Saturday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The opening period saw the Saints open up the scoring just 51 seconds into the contest with a power-play goal by
Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) with assists from
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) and
Brenden Kotyk (Regina, Saskatchewan/Michael A. Riffel HS (Dauphin-MJHL) ).
UW-Eau Claire would answer with a power-play goal just a few minutes later to knot it up at 1-1. At the 8:21 mark of the period, CSS found the net once again with a
Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) goal with assists coming from
Garet Chumley (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS (Jersey-EJHL) ) and
Hunter Bergerson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minot-NAHL) ).
The Blugolds would score with just under three minutes left in the period to send the game 2-2 going into the first intermission.
The second period saw the Saints score just 21 seconds into the period with a power-play goal by
Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)). Assisting on the goal was
Tyler Miller (Fort Frances, Ontario/Rainy River HS (Thunder Bay-SIJHL) ) and Corcoran.
UW-Eau Claire would answer once again four minutes later on an even strength goal.
CSS regained the lead with over four minutes left in the period with a goal from Kotyk and the assist going to B. Nowakowski. The Blugolds, however, would score two unanswered goals to close out the period leading 5-4 heading into the second intermission.
Miller would find the net for the Saints four minutes into the final period with an excellent back hand deke to beat the Blugold goalie and tie up the score at 5-5.
Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) assisted on the goal.
It was all Blugolds from there, scoring at the 8:28 mark and then adding an empty net goal with 12 seconds left in the game.
The Saints (1-5-0, 1-3-0 NCHA) would fall to the 11th ranked and undefeated Blugolds (6-0-0, 4-0-0 NCHA) by a score of 7-5.
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) had 28 saves through two periods for the Saints, while
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) stopped 13 shots in the third period and picked up the loss. Brandon Stephenson made 29 saves to earn the win for the Blugolds.
The Saints have next weekend off and will look to snap a five-game losing streak in a couple of weeks at the MCHA/NCHA Showcase where they will play Marian University (Wis.) in De Pere, Wis. Thanksgiving Weekend. That game is scheduled for 3:30 pm. The game can be heard live on Saints Sports Net.
